Malwitz explores the idea that in colleges across the country professors battle the struggle of understanding the incoming freshman.  The author explains that every year the incoming freshman are younger and the professors are older, therefore having a hard time understand the latest “trends” of their students. He discusses Beloit College’s list of popular media events, people, and phrases which helps professors understand the age gap.The article seems well written and credible. However, the article presents minimal facts. In this situation facts are not necessary because the author’s opinion gives us enough information. The article is most definitely relevant and helps explain the often changing ways and ideals of college freshman. Article was written for the general public or anyone interested in what happens on college campuses. The style is relaxed and informal. It is meant to inform and entertain. Staff journalist covering this piece, he has no specific expertise. No known affiliations exist other than employment with My Central Jersey. Because this is a general news story, author bias doesn’t really impact the piece. However, he does present this story in a positive light which leads me to believe that this sort of bridging of cultural divides is useful. My Central Jersey is an online news source, affiliated with Home News Tribune and Courier News that features local, state, and national news. Their mission statement is very simple and does not indicate a bias or political affiliation. Malwitz offers anecdotal evidence to support the idea that a cultural divide exists. He interviews and provides quotations from professors at various college campuses, but I think the article is a little biased because we don’t get to hear from students themselves. Attributive tags are used to indicate what professors said what, but there is little indication of other viewpoints or ways of thinking about the age divide.
