When looking into my earned privileges and unearned privileges I am extremely shocked to realize just how blessed I am. Some of my earned privileges are my high school diploma, ability to attend East Carolina University, financial aid, the right to vote, and respect from my friends and family. Some of my unearned privileges are a loving mother and family, my health, being born into a lower-middle class family, United States citizenship, English as my first language, a skin color that is not persecuted, and many other things. I feel extremely blessed to have so many privileges compared to other people who may not have nearly as many as I do.

I think this will greatly influence my field work. I will hopefully learn a great deal of insight about what other individuals go through who have either more privileges than me or less privileges. I know that I will probably feel sympathy for those individuals who may have less than I have. However, I also know that I might envy those who have more than me because I have not always been able to have everything I have wanted and because I have had to work harder to gain what I do have. Although, in the end no matter what I learn from my field work I know that I will still be able to say that I am blessed at the end of the day.

When answering the three key questions: What suprised me? What intrigued me? What disturbed me? I found that I do not yet know as much information as I had thought I did. What suprised me about my subculture is their open environment and welcoming group members. During my first fieldsite visit at the Hendrix Theatre to watch their NAACP Night at the Apollo Talent Showcase everyone was very friendly and made the experience fun. What intrigues me about this subculture is their overall mission. I am hoping to learn more about their processes and their goals as a group. When addressing things that disturbed me I want to be completely honest. When going into my fieldsite I was extremely worried that because of my skin color I might be seen as an outsider or judged. However, this previous worries were proven false. I am excited to continue my fieldsite studies and learn more about this group. I believe they have a lot of information to share.

Research Proposal

I will be researching the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, also known as the NAACP. Regaurding the NAACP subculture I know very little. The information I know is based on the national organization not our on capus student organization. My current knowledge of the organization is that they work to promote equal rights among all students with a focus on the equity of black students.

Currently I have no connection with this subculture. However, I am working to establish connections to get a better understanding of what the subculture is all about.

I feel that entering this subculture would not be very difficult. This group seems very open and excited to have others learn about them. However, difficulties may come later as I compile my information. I worry that I may either find too little information or too much information. As of right now I would be considered an outsider. I have no previous connection with this group and no current connection with this group.

My fieldsite for my first set of fieldnotes is at the NAACP’s Showtime at the Apollo. This event is taking place at Hendrix theater at 7:00pm on February 18, 2011.

I would like to learn about their subculture in the greatest about of detail possible. I want to emerge myself within this group and find out what this subculture is truly about. My main focus during my research is going to be the legislation that has been affected by the NAACP. I would like to focus on what the organization hopes to accomplish and what their main goals are.

The author in this article is discussing the 50th anniversary of the Brown v. Board supreme court decision. This article highlights the journey that was taken to ensure the rights of all people equally. The author shows no bias and approaches the article from an educational point of view. The article is intended for anyone who is interested in learning more about the steps that were taken to ensure equal rights. The article is very useful and provides a great deal of information. This article works as a base for me to work from. The article takes me through the history and the legislation that was passed to ensure equal rights which is something that the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People works so hard for. The author of this source is Frank Brown from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He eventually became the dean of UNC-Chapel Hill and is extremely qualified to produce such a source. The article is from the Education and Urban Society Journal which makes this a very reliable source.

Roach, R. (2005). CLOSING THE ACHIEVEMENT GAP: Who’s Going to Take the Weight? (Cover story). Black Issues in Higher Education, 22(7), 32-39. Retrieved from EBSCOhost.

The author Ronald Roach describes the educational policies that are being used to help bring equality to all students. The article highlights the No Child Left Behind Act and the Call for Action in Education plan. The Call for Action in Education plan was established by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). The Call for Action in Education plan was used prior to the No Child Left Behind Act. This article highlights many key ideas and perspectives of the NAACP. The Call to Action in Education plan detailed a five year plan to help reduce the racial differences in schools by fifty percent. Roach discusses the extra needed support of the government who is strictly concerned with the No Child Left Behind Policy. The NAACP feels that this policy does not focus enough on the racial disparities that are occuring within our education systems. The author shows a slight bias against the government’s plans. This does not effect the credibility of the article because when dealing with a touchy subject like race bias’ often occur. The author’s audience is individuals who want to learn more about the process that the NAACP goes through to get fair legislation passed. This article is very useful to help me understand what the NAACP fights for and what they work to achieve. It provides great knowledge about the type of legislation that the NAACP would like to see implemented.

Stuart, R. (2009). At 100, NAACP Still Kicking. Diverse: Issues in Higher Education, 25(26), 12-13. Retrieved from EBSCOhost.

The author of this article Stuart Reginald discusses the 100th anniversary of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). The article focuses on celebrating the anniversary, but also gives an inside scoop to the organization of the NAACP. The author shows no bias and is simply writing about the history of the NAACP and it’s legendary past. Reginald’s  intended audience would be members of the NAACP, supporters of the NAACP, or even just the general public. The article is very easy to understand and very interesting to read. This article is very useful to my research because it provides information about NAACP chapters on college campus’. It mentions that some of the student college chapters have been in place since the 1930s which I find to be very useful and very interesting. This discovery made me realize that there would be lots of history of the student college organizations. The article also points out areas that the NAACP wants to focus on. Such as the racial inequities in the criminal justice system and inequities that occur on not only college campus’s, but in educational systems across our country.

This article from the journal Black Issues in Higher Education details the everyday actions of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). The source does not list the author. However, due to it’s location I feel that it is still a worthy and credible source. The article shows a bias in favor of the NAACP and black rights and a bias against the confederate flag. The article details NAACP members from South Carolina and their fight to get the confederate flag off of the South Carolina Statehouse dome. They successfully got the confederate flag taken down, however the flag was moved to a memorial and the statehouse grounds. This was unacceptable to the organization, so they continued to boycott and protest. This article is very useful to help me understand the actions the NAACP takes in order to achieve their goals. The article made me realize that the NAACP and its members are willing to take any neccessary steps to achieve their goals. It highlights the struggles that the NAACP is willing to face to get the smallest things changed. During the boycott, the NAACP did not recieve the neccessary support, however they still feel that they must work to change something that is wrong.

The authors of this blog article do a very good job at explaining microagressions and how they exist among us. The post is from Psychology today an online blog site for those from the psychology field to post different articles concerning the field. The authors are both highly qualified to produce this blog entry. D.W. Sue has a Ph. D and D. Rivera has a master’s degree. This article is very useful for my research because it highlights some of the key areas that I wish to discuss with the members of the ECU NAACP group. The article presents itself in an easy to read format that anyone can read. I feel this was done so that any individual can learn about microagressions since we are all guilty of being a perpretrator at some point.  This article may not provide as much direct information about my group, but it is a good start to help me develop my research plan of action and get a start on possible interview questions. This article in comparison to my other sources is more general about multiculturalism and racial issues. My other sources are more specific to my subculture and not as broad in nature.
